What is a
white screen test?

A white screen test fills your entire display with pure white (#FFFFFF) so defects stand out. With nothing else on screen, small problems that normally blend into images and text become easy to see. That makes it the quickest first check when you buy or inspect a monitor, laptop, phone or TV, and a handy way to see dirt and smudges before you clean a display.

On a white screen you can spot:

  • ✅ Dead pixels: tiny black dots that never light up
  • ✅ Stuck pixels: dots frozen on one color, usually red, green or blue
  • ✅ Uneven brightness or tint: darker, yellowish or pinkish patches
  • ✅ Dust, fingerprints and fine scratches on the surface

Hot pixels (which stay lit) and backlight bleed show up better on a black screen, so it's worth running both.

How to test your screen for
dead pixels and defects.

  • ✅ Clean the screen first with a dry microfiber cloth, so dust is not mistaken for a defect.
  • ✅ Set brightness to maximum and turn off night light, blue-light filters and automatic color adjustment.
  • ✅ Click Launch White Screen (or press F11 on desktop) to fill the display. Press Esc to exit.
  • ✅ Scan slowly from corner to corner, first up close and then from arm's length. Dead pixels look like black dots and stuck pixels look like colored dots.
  • ✅ Repeat with black, red, green and blue. Use black in a dim room to reveal hot pixels and light leaking from the edges. Red, green and blue expose stuck sub-pixels.
  • ✅ Note any dot that stays in the same place on every color. That is likely a real defect. Check the manufacturer pixel policy before you return the device, because many allow a small number of faulty pixels.

For a color-by-color walkthrough, read our guide to testing for dead pixels with different colors. If you only need the basic check, run the white screen test.

How to use a
white screen to clean your screen

Dust and smudges are much easier to see against solid white than on a normal desktop.

  • ✅ Open the white screen at full brightness and note where the marks are.
  • ✅ Press Esc, power off the display and wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, lightly dampen the cloth with water (never spray liquid directly on the screen) or follow your manufacturer's cleaning advice. Don't press hard.
  • ✅ Power the display back on and relaunch the white screen to check for streaks and missed spots.

How the
WhiteScrn tool works

Everything runs in your browser using the fullscreen feature it provides. Pick a color, click Launch and press Esc when you're done. Extras:

  • ✅ 12 preset colors plus a custom color picker: white, black, red, green, blue, yellow, orange, pink, purple, cyan, gray and Zoom Light.
  • ✅ Pixel grid overlay with automatic contrast, for checking uniformity and pinpointing a defect.
  • ✅ Resolution presets from 480p to 8K plus iPhone and iPad sizes, with width and height fields and a download button for a solid-color image at that size.
  • ✅ Custom text: show your own message in any text and background color, from 12px to 72px.

Use Cases

What Is a White Screen Used For?

From checking a new monitor to lighting a video call, here are the most common ways people use a fullscreen white display.

  • Dead pixel testing

A solid white display makes black dots (dead pixels) easy to spot on new monitors, laptops, phones and TVs, so you can return a faulty panel in time.

    Run a white screen test
  • Screen cleaning

Dust, fingerprints and smudges stand out on a bright, uniform background. Wipe the screen with it powered off, then turn it back on to check for missed spots.

  • Video call lighting

Use a warm white fullscreen as soft, even fill light for Zoom, Teams and streams when your room is dim.

    Try Zoom lighting
  • Photography and small subjects

A bright screen works as a free, diffuse light source for close-up and product shots. It is no replacement for studio lighting, but it is handy in a pinch.

Use your screen as a light
  • Backlight uniformity checks

Look for uneven brightness, color tint or backlight bleed across the panel. The pixel grid overlay helps you scan the display systematically.

  • Stuck and hot pixel checks

Switch to black, or cycle red, green and blue, to find pixels that stay lit and to identify which subpixel is affected.
